New advice

BILL Stewart, the secretary of Britain鈥檚 Agricultural and Food Research
Council, is to become the next chief scientific adviser to the Prime Minister.
He takes over from the existing adviser, Sir John Fairclough, in October.

Stewart, Boyd Baxter professor of biology at the University of Dundee,
has played a key role in helping the AFRC to restructure during the 1980s
in response to heavy cutbacks in government funding. He will serve as chief
scientific adviser for at least two years.
