The European Community may triple its support for scientific collaboration
with Eastern Europe next year to 86 million Ecus (£60 million), the
Community’s research commissioner Filippo Pandolfi announced in Budapest
this month.

Speaking to members of Eureka, the European technology R&D programme,
Pandolfi stressed the importance of technological cooperation in paving
the way for the eventual economic and political unification of Europe. ‘R&D
activities are the preliminary step for the modernisation of this part of
Europe and for allowing these countries to become members of the European
community,’ he said.
