Female staff are discriminated against in university computer departments.
They are paid 拢2000 a year less on average than their male colleagues.
They are appointed at lower grades and are under-represented in the top
jobs.
The Association of University Teachers last month published the results
of a survey over the five years to 1992. It found that in 1991 women staff
were paid an average of 拢19 750 compared to about 拢21 800
for men. Eighteen per cent of all computer staff are women but last year
they were over-represented in the 12 lowest grades and under-represented
in all but one of the 13 highest grades.
