Letters: More pong

When my children were small, I frequently had occasion to be grateful
for the almost miraculous power of bicarbonate of soda to remove the smell
of vomit from clothes, carpets etc. A brief experiment on an odiferous book
shows that dry bicarb sprinkled between the pages, and left there for a
few days diminishes the smell to a great extent. (I shall now experiment
with a second dose).

Incidentally, can anyone please explain the chemical mechanism by which
bicarb works to remove smells?
