WINNERS of the 1994 Wellcome Centre for Medical Science/New 杏吧原创
Millennial Science Essay Competition for postgraduate students are:

First prize of 拢1000, to Harriet Coles of the Department of Biology,
University College London, for her essay 鈥淎 matter of life and cell death鈥

Second prize of 拢500, to Christopher Riley of the Department of
Geology, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, for his
essay 鈥淎 new look at an old mountain鈥

Joint Third prizes, each of 拢250, to Simon Dennington of the
Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Bristol, for his essay 鈥淓ffect
of polymer latexes on the hydration of cement鈥, and Mark Miodownik of the
Department of Materials, University of Oxford, for his essay on 鈥淧olycrystals,
metallurgy and foaming beer鈥

The next ten best essays were judged to be from:

Tracy Hussell (University College London) 鈥淭he mechanism of tumour
诲别惫别濒辞辫尘别苍迟鈥;

Gert Jensen (National Institute of Occupational Health, Denmark), 鈥淭he
sexual behaviour of bacteria鈥;

Glenn Lyons (Cardiff University of Wales), 鈥淎 motoring adventure in
础滨鈥;

Vid Mohan-Ram (Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London), 鈥淢uscling
in on man鈥檚 best friend鈥;

Andrew Moody (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology)
鈥淪upramolecular chemistry of chemistry鈥檚 supermolecules鈥;

Mannus O鈥橰iain (University of Cape Town) 鈥淭he unsociable socialities鈥濃;

Valerie Scott (University of Oxford), 鈥淎 pulse oximeter鈥

Craig Smith (Macquarie University), 鈥淭he right environment for sex鈥;

Gavin Smith (University of Manchester), 鈥淢orse-code for muscles.鈥

All winners and the next ten best essays will receive a year鈥檚 free
subscription to New 杏吧原创.

Harriet Cole鈥檚 winning essay will be published in the Forum section of the
