This week’s questions

TV hits: If my old TV set is switched on for any length of time it begins to emit a high-pitched noise. If I hit the TV it solves the problem, but a few minutes later the noise returns. What is happening?

Controlled blast: Why can I cancel out the hissing noise of my gas fire by aiming an old-style ultrasonic TV remote control at it?

Frosty reception: A friend tells me that when he returns home after working live on 400-kilovolt electric cables, he interferes with his TV set. His colleagues suffer similar problems and all must stay out of the room until, later in the evening, the effect wears off. Why does this happen?
