This week’s questions

Rain on the plain: I have read that elephants can hear the approach of rain on the African plains because of their ability to hear at extremely low frequencies. What is the low frequency threshold at which they can hear and what is it that they are hearings?

Oh crumbs!: Why is it that toast crumbs stick like glue to plates whereas breadcrumbs do not?

Growing bubbles: What forms the bubbles that appear in a glass container which has been filled with near boiling water, sealed and then gradually cooled under a cold tap for several minutes? I noticed this as a child when making crude hot water bottles from pop bottles and it has puzzled me ever since.

Souperbowls: Chinese rice bowls often contain translucent 鈥済rains of rice鈥 which are incorporated into the porcelain. Clearly these are not grains of rice. But what are they and how are they put there? Are grains of rice used in any way during their manufacture?
