THE takeover of the British drugs company Wellcome by its larger rival Glaxo will create a 鈥渓eaner and fitter鈥� company, but the nation鈥檚 research effort in pharmaceuticals will suffer, a group of MPs say this week.
The Commons science and technology select committee says that it expects 鈥渁 substantial reduction鈥� in the amount of research the new company will conduct. 鈥淎nd fewer jobs will mean fewer drugs.鈥� But, say the MPs, the slimmed-down company should be better able to compete in the global marketplace.
