Poor relations

FORMER polytechnics that have become universities are caught in a poverty trap, says the Association of University Teachers. The association predicts that the govemment鈥檚 formula for allocating research funds will give these new universities progressively less money for research, while established universities will attract more.

鈥淚t reinforces the general principle of 鈥榯o those that hath it shall be given鈥,鈥 says Conor Cradden head of research at the AUT.

The higher education funding councils have been instructed to allocate research funds to universities with a proven record of quality research. This means that a new university trying to build a research base from scratch has no chance of catching up.
