This week’s questions

Not mush room: Near where I live there are toadstools growing through the pavement, the surface of which they have displaced in fairly large chunks. What mechanism allows toadstools – essentially very soft and squashy items – to push through two inches of asphalt?

Dawn din: When listening to birds in the early morning it always strikes me that they seem to sing loudest between the first glimpse of dawn and the actual sunrise. Is this true? If so, what is the reason?
