Combination man

These anthropological essays are in honour of Eric Wolf, an American scholar who helped to integrate the disciplines of anthropology and history while putting the peasants of Europe on the map. Articulating Hidden Histories, edited by Jane Schneider and Rayna Rapp (University of California, 拢14.95/$18 pbk, ISBN 0 520 08582 5), is a rich collection, ranging from the invention of tribalism in colonial West Africa to the ecological activism of North American housewives. One of the most striking essays asks 鈥淲ho were the bushmen?鈥, unravelling the construction of what we now misguidedly see as a well-defined and ancient 鈥渆thnic鈥 group.
