It is easy to dismiss the conflict sensationally started between Thomas Huxley and Bishop 鈥淪oapy Sam鈥� Wilberforce about Darwinism versus Biblical doctrine more than a century ago as being settled. Science got the verdict and evolution is accepted. Not true. Science on Trial by Douglas Futuyma (Sinauer Associates, 拢15.95, ISBN 0 878 93184 8) shows that Darwin still has plenty of enemies, most of them expert in the use of camouflage and bogus reason.
Particularly in the US, but elsewhere too, there has been a remarkable upsurge of creationism. Even a president, Reagan, thought that creationism should be taught in schools as a matter of fairness, putting myth on the same footing as evolution supported by hard evidence. The believers in Bible history have stolen some of their opponents鈥� clothes, for tactical reasons, hence the 鈥淐reation Science Research Center鈥� and pronouncements such as 鈥渢he scientific teaching of Biblical creationism鈥�, where the word 鈥渟cientific鈥� is meaningless, but is used for effect. Creationists deserve to be met with firepower. Futuyma provides it.
