This week’s questions

Design fault: While working in the garden, I saw a beetle walk past, take a wrong step and land on its back. Without my intervention it would have stayed in this position and probably died. Why is it that millions of years of evoution have not eradicated this basic and potentially lethal design fault?

Burning question: What is going on in one鈥檚 mouth when a chilli pepper is eaten and a burning sensation ensues? This is often maintained throughout digestion, producing the 鈥渨arm tract鈥 glow in the abdomen, familiar to chilli pepper junkies.

Cross examination: What was the precise cause of death in those who were crucified?

Cleaning up: Cola drinks do a beautiful job of cleaning the corrosion from brass and similar alloys. How does this work? And what effect do the chemicals that cause this have on your stomach when you drink cola?
