Do computers dream of cartoon toys?

WHEN Walt Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs back in 1937, it was the world鈥檚 first full-length animated feature film. Almost sixty years and dozens of films later, Walt Disney Pictures is once again breaking new ground with Toy Story 鈥 an animated feature film produced entirely using computers. Computers have animated short films, and parts of features such as Jurassic Park, but they have never animated a full-length feature film before.

The technology was provided by Pixar Animation Studios, which used over 90 years of computer time to generate the 110 000 frames used in the 77-minute film. The computers drew all the characters using stored patterns of three-dimensional shapes. The toys鈥 movements were choreographed by human animators.

The movie follows a typical Hollywood 鈥渙dd-couple鈥 plot, with Woody, a cowboy doll, teaming up with a toy spaceman called Buzz Lightyear. Toy Story will open in Britain in March.
