Radiation patchwork

A SURVEY of the Dounreay nuclear site in Scotland has discovered 1500
patches of radioactive contamination, says the UK Atomic Energy Authority. Three
per cent of the 43-hectare site has been cordoned off, with signs warning
workers to keep out.

The UKAEA says the survey, which cost 拢750 000 and was requested by the
government鈥檚 Nuclear Installations Inspectorate a year ago, was the most
comprehensive ever carried out at Dounreay. 鈥淭he study literally and
metaphorically left no stone unturned,鈥 says Dounreay鈥檚 outgoing director, John
Baxter. 鈥淥ur detractors will no doubt cast criticism, but the real fact is we
identified a problem, studied it and are now resolving it.鈥

The UKAEA is now investigating the possibility of removing all the
contaminated soil.
