SCOTTISH Natural Heritage has bought one of Britain鈥檚 rarest peat bogs
for 拢1.8 million. The peat in Flanders Moss, a raised bog near Stirling,
will not now be dug up for use as garden fertiliser.
Last week SNH announced that it had reached agreement with the peat
extraction company William Sinclair to purchase the bog鈥檚 mineral rights.
William Sinclair was given planning permission to extract peat in 1988, but only
began preliminary works. SNH has promised to restore and protect the bog, which
covers more than 500 hectares.
Peat bogs 鈥渁re a natural habitat of great importance which have, over the
centuries, suffered dramatic decline鈥, says chief executive Roger Crofts. 鈥淲e
therefore have a special responsibility to protect and enhance the best
