A MORE promising idea is Yahoo鈥檚 move into the European market with a series
of localised directories.

A keyword is a keyword is a keyword, so all automated search engines work in
a similar way. But Yahoo is a directory and its sites are categorised manually.
So here localised versions make more sense. The British directory (due to launch
some time this summer) will contain between 6000 and 8000 listings, plus links
to the much larger US site where appropriate.

Looking up 鈥済overnment鈥 in the British site will find Her Majesty鈥檚
government instead of the American one, and 鈥渇ootball鈥 will find sites devoted
to the beautiful game, not gridiron. Yahoo in the US has 鈥渁dded value services鈥
that include news and sports from Reuters鈥攖he British version will have
services more appropriate to a British audience. French and German sites that
follow will be in the appropriate languages and will reflect the special
interests of their target markets.
