US feed ban

EIGHT years after Britain banned the inclusion of cattle carcasses in
feedstuffs intended for cows, the US plans to do the same. The move has been
prompted by the 10 recent cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in Britain that
have been linked with BSE.

The US Food and Drug Administration, which regulates animal feed, proposed
the ban on 14 May. 鈥淭his action is being taken to protect the health of animals
and to reduce any risk which might be faced by humans,鈥 said the FDA.

Under the rules proposed by the FDA, any animal feed that included protein
from ruminants鈥攃attle, sheep, goats, mule deer and elk鈥攚ould be
considered 鈥渁dulterated鈥. The FDA will make a final decision after a month of
public consultation.
