Stolen tracks

THIEVES using power tools have stolen two of the world鈥檚 only known
stegosaur footprints from a rocky beach in the far north of Western
Australia.

鈥淭he thieves went to a lot of trouble,鈥 says Ken McNamara, of the Western
Australian Museum. 鈥淭he site is isolated and covered by water at high tide.鈥

The theft was discovered by local Aborigines who regard the site as sacred.
鈥淭he loss to science is incalculable,鈥 says McNamara. 鈥淲e need these footprints
to build up a picture of what life was like 130 million years ago.鈥
