Changing places :

Scienceworks, the popular 鈥渉ands on鈥 science centre in Melbourne鈥檚 western
suburbs, has a new director who took up her position last month. She is Gaye
Hamilton
who was fomerly director of the Werribee Zoo and assistant director
at the Melbourne Zoo. She says she wants to establish in the minds of
Melburnians that there is something new and worthwhile to see at Scienceworks at
least once a year.

Jeff Weber, who has been working in Indonesia and China as an environmental
consultant, has been appointed as the dean of the faculty of health, science and
engineering at the UNITEC Institute of Technology in Auckland. Weber, who has
PhD in agricultural and natural resource economics from Washington State
University, has held academic and research positions at several universities in
New zealand and the US.

Soil scientist Malcolm Oades will be the next director of the Waite
Agricultural Research Institute and head of the University of Adelaide鈥檚
Division of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Oades will be in charge
of Australia鈥檚 largest agricultural research complex. The division, with 200
academic staff and 1500 students, is home to four CRCs鈥攕oil and land
management, viticulture, weed management systems and premium quality wool. Oades
was recently awarded a large ARC grant to investigate the retention of organic
matter in soils.

On 1 January next year, John O鈥機allaghan will become the CEO of the
CRC for Advanced Computational Systems (ACSys) in Canberra. O鈥機allaghan, who is
currently chief of the CSIRO Division of Information Technology, takes over from
Michael McRobbie who has been appointed to a senior IT position at
Indiana University in the US (home pages, 12 October).
