Technology jackpot

A CATHEDRAL of technology is to be built on a patch of derelict land in
Britain鈥檚 former industrial heartland.

Last week, the Millennium Commission, which distributes money raised by the
National Lottery, announced a 拢50 million grant to Millennium Point, a
development planned for Birmingham鈥檚 city centre. The project, which will cost
拢111 million, will include a centre for advanced technological research
and a science museum.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so much at one with the history of a city that has built up through
excellence in manufacturing and technology,鈥 says David Warner,
pro-vice-chancellor of the University of Central England, Birmingham, which is
backing the project along with a consortium of local businesses. 鈥淭he past,
present and future of technology will all be represented.鈥 The university鈥檚
engineering and computer technology faculty, which teaches 2500 students, plans
to relocate to the site.
