Breathtaking ozone

NEW evidence linking air pollution to asthma attacks was unveiled in
Brighton this week at the annual conference of the National Society for Clean
Air.

Stephen Holgate of the Southampton General Hospital told the conference that
exposure to ozone, which is created by reactions involving gases in car
exhausts, can cause the linings of the lungs鈥 bronchial tubes to shed cells.

This, Holgate says, 鈥渋s a characteristic feature of asthma鈥, and may allow
asthma-causing allergens to penetrate the walls of the tubes more easily.
