Calling megastars

INTERNATIONAL megastars of science be warned: the British government
could soon be after your services.

In a report issued this month, Robert May, the government鈥檚 chief scientist,
says that experts from overseas should be recruited onto Britain鈥檚 high-level
scientific advisory committees.

鈥淚t would be an impossible dream to get people completely free of bias,鈥 says
May. But he argues that scientists from abroad have less vested interest in
decisions that may stem from their advice. And in some fields, any one country
has no more than a handful of world-class scientists. Casting the net wider
would help, says May.
