Virtual wipeout

LABOUR鈥檚 landslide victory in last week鈥檚 general election not only
devastated Britain鈥檚 Conservative Party, it also overwhelmed Web sites that had
promised to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of the results.

Before the polling stations opened, the Financial Times鈥檚 site
promised 鈥渞esults as they come in鈥, while the General Election 鈥97 pages, run by
the publisher EMAP, planned regular news updates. But by the next morning, both
sites had been disabled by technical difficulties. Adrian Price of the
Financial Times says that with more than 15 000 hits in the hours following
the end of polling the site had been overwhelmed.
