Food crackdown

THE European Commission is tightening food safeguards in the wake of
accusations from the European Parliament that it moved too slowly to protect
consumers from BSE.

It plans to reorganise the scientific committees that advise it on food
hygiene and veterinary standards to make them answerable to the part of the
Commission responsible for consumer protection, rather than the part that deals
with the food industry.

The scientists鈥 hitherto secretive debates will be 鈥渁ccessible鈥 to the
public, the Commission promises. It will also nearly treble the number of food
and veterinary inspectors it employs, and move them from Brussels to Ireland to
form an independent inspection agency.
