The latest entrant to the Einstein industry is Robert Goldman with Einstein鈥檚 God (Jason Aronson, $20, ISBN 1 56821 983 0). He tackles the apparent need of Einstein to find a spiritual substitute for religious belief. Goldman has had access to much unpublished correspondence bearing on what Einstein鈥檚 remark 鈥淚 am a deeply religious non-believer鈥� showed about him. It is clear that spiritual concerns were fundamental to his nature and thought, but he never succeeded in satisfactorily defining his position. An absorbing read on many levels.
