Grave robbers

A large chunk of the skull of what could be the world鈥檚 largest Tyrannosaurus
rex has gone missing. Last month, the former owners of the Montana ranch on
which the fossil was buried removed two jawbones. These were later returned to
federal authorities
(This Week, 27 September, p 5).

Keith Rigby of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, who is leading the
dig, hoped that the tyrannosaur had escaped serious damage. However, when he
returned to the site last week, he found that two-thirds of the left side of the
skull, which was lying uppermost, was missing. He says: 鈥淭his is about as bad as
I could have imagined.鈥
