The Pentagon is testing a portable computerised translator that recognises
2500 English words and phrases and speaks their Bosnian counterparts. The
machine is helping soldiers cooperate with local people to clear landmines.
The computer includes a colour screen, which shows maps and pictures of
mines. If it can鈥檛 translate them, it records complex spoken responses for later
translation at headquarters.
