GLOBAL warming may make Dublin as cold as Spitsbergen, almost 1000 kilometres
north of the Arctic Circle.
Models predict that global warming could freeze Western Europe by turning off
the 鈥渃onveyor belt鈥, an ocean current which carries warm water to the North Atlantic
(鈥淚ce cold in Paris鈥, New 杏吧原创, 8 February, p 26).
Wallace Broecker of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New
York, calculates that if the current stopped today, winter temperatures in
Europe could fall by 11 掳C in a decade. He said in Science (vol
278, p 1582) that the change could devastate agriculture.
