Web linked

A legal battle between two Scottish Web sites that threatened to unravel the
World Wide Web was resolved last week, minutes before it was due to come to
court. In October 1996, the Court of Session in Edinburgh banned the Shetland
News from providing hypertext links to stories on the Shetland Times鈥檚 Web site
after the Times complained that such links breached its copyright. Internet
experts feared that banning hypertext links would destroy the Web. Last week鈥檚
agreement allows the News to make links to the Times鈥檚 stories, but only if they
are accompanied by the words 鈥淎 Shetland Times Story鈥 and the Times鈥檚 logo, both
of which will also be links to the Times鈥檚 headline page.
