To protect against thieves, a video recorder can already be programmed with
its owner’s postcode. Now Reginald Maling of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, has
taken the idea a step further (UK 2 311 442). Because of the noise of modern
life people may miss public warnings of events such as flooding. Maling’s answer
is to program television sets with the user’s postcode. If there is a public
warning, a message can be sent out by teletext to people in the affected
postcodes and displayed on their television sets.
