Death in Venice

Some of Italy鈥檚 biggest chemical companies appeared in court last week when
the country鈥檚 most important environmental trial ever resumed in Venice. The
companies have been charged with culpable homicide over pollution they allegedly
caused over several decades at Porto Marghera on Venice lagoon.

Former factory workers started the action in early 1997, claiming that
pollution resulting from the production of vinyl chloride caused at least 117
people to die of cancer.

A spokesman for the company Montedison says: 鈥淲e adopted scrupulously the
same safety rules as other companies all over the world.鈥
