Solar tornadoes

FURIOUS tornadoes whirl around the Sun, scientists in Britain announced last
week.

Using the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, the scientists examined regions
near the Sun鈥檚 poles, where X-ray images had revealed bright spikes. 鈥淔or the
first time, we have found that they are in fact rotating columns of gas,鈥 says
Richard Harrison of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford.

The solar tornadoes, some nearly as wide as the Earth, have wind speeds of up
to 500 000 kilometres per hour.
