Japan is planning to spend £4.5 billion on science and technology
projects as part of a package intended to revitalise the country’s flagging
economy. Some of the money will be used to repair and equip government research
institutes. Another project will link schools by a nationwide fibre-optic
network. The package also includes £6.8 billion for other telecoms and
information infrastructure. Companies upgrading their computer systems will be
given tax breaks.
