Altered food escapes

Foods in Europe containing genetically modified organisms will have to be
labelled only when the altered DNA鈥攐r proteins from it鈥攃an be
detected. The European Commission last week agreed to redraft its proposals,
dropping the requirement that foods are labelled 鈥渕ay contain鈥 GMOs when their
presence is uncertain. Only 鈥渄oes contain鈥 or 鈥渄oes not contain鈥 labels will be
allowed.

All European Union members except Denmark, Sweden and Italy wanted the
change. But the environmental group Greenpeace claims that because tests are
unreliable and food additives are excluded, 90 per cent of products containing
GMOs will not be labelled.
