Since priests often risk attack in their work, they need every bit of help
they can get. Anthony, Michael and Desmond McCarthy of Bishop’s Stortford have
taken advantage of the fact that they usually wear a crucifix to build a novel
personal alarm (GB 2 319 647). The alarm is triggered via a push-fit socket
which connects the crucifix to a neck band. If anyone grabs the crucifix, it
comes free and starts flashing and making a screeching noise. If the priest
fears attack, he simply pulls the crucifix free and waves it at the
assailant.
