Modern camcorders use image stabilisers to correct camera shake when the user
shoots without a tripod. In EP 831 644, Sony admits that the stabiliser cannot
always distinguish unintentional shake—when shooting from a car or boat,
for example—and deliberate panning or tilting. So it has designed a
camcorder with an optical sensor that monitors the position of the user’s face
with respect to the camera, and circuitry that detects whether or not the camera
and user are moving together. If they are, the user is probably intending to pan
or tilt. Otherwise it’s unintentional wobble that should be corrected.
