Some conditioners can fade hair, says Boots. So the Nottingham-based
pharmacist is patenting a new hair-care mix (WO 96/36312). The chemistry of
existing conditioners changes in sunlight or hot weather. Reactive free radicals
are released which cause the hair to fade. Boots has found that adding extracts
from the deciduous Chinese ginkgo tree and the birch tree helps to stop free
radicals forming. And adding sunscreen agents, which block ultraviolet light,
reduces the number of radicals even further, resulting in a conditioner that is
much less likely to cause fading.
