Many premature deaths among patients with adult-onset, or type 2, diabetes
could be prevented by applying aggressive drug therapy to control blood pressure
and glucose levels, suggests research published in The Lancet and the
British Medical Journal. One of the BMJ papers (vol 317, p
703) reports that tight control of blood pressure in 758 patients cut the number
of premature deaths and complications by 24 per cent. 鈥淚ntensive therapy of type
2 diabetes is beneficial,鈥 comments David Nathan of the Massachusetts General
Hospital in The Lancet(vol 352, p 832).
