Nano detector

Particles just a nanometre across can now be detected and analysed, thanks to
a device developed by Bell Labs in New Jersey. A high-intensity laser ionises
particles, which are then accelerated. The size and composition of the particles
can be calculated from their velocity and charge when they hit a detector. The
instrument was designed to detect impurities during semiconductor manufacturing.
It is being adapted to monitor atmospheric pollution.
