Anthony Kenny, former president of the British Academy, writes with clarity
and enthusiasm in A Brief History of Western Philosophy. It鈥檚 excellent
introduction, both to philosophy and Western culture. There is a curious
omission of Karl Popper鈥檚 work, which has had at least as powerful effect on
scientists as Wittgenstein has had on sociologists and purveyors of popular
