country, an Australian report reveals.
The report analyses data on national identity collected in 1996 by the
International Social Survey Programme. Nearly 31 000 people from 24 countries
filled in questionnaires. In all these countries, people frequently picked sport
and science as sources of national pride. Two other popular choices鈥攖he
arts and economic performance鈥攚ere only important in some countries.
Australians and Americans were the proudest of their scientific and
technological achievements, followed closely by people from New Zealand, Canada
and Austria. 鈥淭he finding about science was completely unexpected,鈥� says
Jonathan Kelley of the Australian National University in Canberra, one of the
report鈥檚 authors.
