Resistance fighters

Pfizer, the US-based drugs company, is planning to sue the European Union for
banning four antibiotics used as growth promoters in livestock. EU agriculture
ministers agreed the ban last month, fearing that the practice could lead to
antibiotic-resistant bacteria threatening human health.

But Pfizer claims the EU has 鈥渘o scientific proof of risk to human health鈥.
It will be backed in its case at the European Court of Justice by Eli-Lily and
other companies, which together expect the ban to cost them E180 million a
year.
