Pill-popping pooches

America鈥檚 mad dogs can now get a pharmacological fix. For the first time, the
US Food and Drug Administration has approved two drugs intended to help pets
with behavioural problems.

Clomipramine can now be used to treat separation anxiety. Canine sufferers
display behaviours like barking, chewing and 鈥渋nappropriate elimination鈥 when
their owners go out. Selegiline can be used to treat cognitive dysfunction
syndrome, an age-related mental deterioration. Both drugs are used in human
medicine, clomipramine as an antidepressant and selegiline for Parkinson鈥檚
disease.
