A SCOTTISH sea loch is the last British refuge for rare reefs built by worms
rather than corals.
Serpula vermicularis builds reefs from the tubes in which it lives.
A recent survey found blocks of reef fringing the shores of Loch Creran in
western Scotland. Sue Scott, a marine biologist who took part in the survey,
describes the reefs as 鈥渢he best developed in the world鈥� and calls for their
protection under European law.
