When heavyweight boxers Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield fought for the
World Championship recently, the ringside judges disagreed wildly on who should
win. Now Michael Barrett of Birmingham has invented a monitor (WO 99/10052 and
GB 2 328 605) that should avoid future disputes. Barrett’s monitor has touch
sensors that register the force of the blows, as well as their number. A
piezoelectric strain gauge is built into the wrist band of each boxing glove,
and transmits a radio signal every time the fighter lands a punch. A receiver at
the ringside prints out a log of the hits.
