More than a hundred animal species have disappeared from East Anglia in the
past 200 years as farmers have turned the fens and meadows of eastern England
into prairie lands, a study by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
(RSPB) has concluded.
Insects dominate the list. But the disappeared also include birds such as the
red-backed shrike and fish such as the burbot. 鈥淢ost of the damage has happened
in the past 50 years,鈥� says RSPB conservation director Mark Avery. He blames
land drainage, intensified farming and pollution.
