Canadian astronomers are to be the beneficiaries of a novel 鈥渄ark sky
preserve鈥�, a park in which the light pollution that can ruin astronomical
observations will be strictly controlled.
The Torrance Barrens Conservation Reserve will be created from a 2000-hectare
swath of government-owned land near Georgian Bay, about 90 kilometres north of
the bright lights of Toronto. The region is already popular with
amateur astronomers and the reserve鈥檚 special status will restrict the kinds of
lighting that can be installed in the area.
