G8 modifies agenda

World leaders have commissioned a global investigation into the safety of
genetically modified food. In a joint communiqu茅 issued this week at
their summit in Cologne, Germany, leaders of the G8 nations invited the
Paris-based OECD鈥攚hich represents the world鈥檚 industrialised
nations鈥攖o prepare two studies on biotechnology. One will focus on whether
genetically modified food is safe to eat; the other will examine how
biotechnology is regulated in different countries. However, the investigation
does not extend to the environmental safety of modified crops. The OECD will
report back at next year鈥檚 G8 meeting in Okinawa, Japan.
