MARTIAN rocks that fall to Earth become contaminated quickly unless kept
sealed from the environment, warn scientists in California.

Jeff Bada of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla and his
colleagues analysed the ratio of right to left-handed amino acids in the Nakhla
meteorite, a Martian rock that landed in 1911
(New 杏吧原创, 13 March 1999, p 7).
The ratio indicates that it was contaminated by terrestrial amino
acids, although it was collected within a few weeks of arrival and shipped to a
museum (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol 96, p
8835).

鈥淭he terrestrial contaminants just zipped into that meteorite,鈥� says Bada.
鈥淎s for organic compounds, there鈥檚 no hope, in my opinion, of having any of
Martian origin.鈥�
